What Exactly is a Meter Box, and How Does It Work?

Every electrical system needs a meter box to measure and record the electricity usage, just as every workplace needs power to function. A safety switch, also known as a residual current device (RCD), is one of the crucial components found inside the meter box and is required to follow standards wiring guidelines to guarantee the electrical setup is carried out correctly and safely.

While the components within a meter box can seem exotic to some people, electricians are as familiar with them as they are with electrical tape and cable ties.

How Do Meter Boxes Work?

An enclosure box called a meter box is mounted on the exterior wall of residential and commercial buildings and is used to house and protect various electrical components.

The electric reading meter, the instrument that monitors electricity usage, is most notably housed in a meter box.

The main switch, fuses, and circuit breakers, including the residual current device (RCD), which can control and stop the flow of power, are other parts found in the box.

A single 15 Amp power outlet and two 10 Amp power outlets are required for all meter boxes. This is the very minimum; there are typically more GPOs (General Purpose Outlets).
